Matthew Rothwell

Chief Financial Officer

Matthew joined Nichols as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary in April 2026.

My vision for Nichols’s future

To build on Nichols’ strong heritage and brands to create a larger, more diversified international soft drinks business, while staying true to what makes it special. For me, that is about combining disciplined financial performance with continued investment in our brands, people and routes to market. We have a real opportunity to scale what we do well, simplify where needed, and focus on sustainable, profitable growth over the long term.

What has been your experience working as part of Nichols / what makes it different/unique?

What has stood out very quickly is the people. There is a genuine pride in the business and its brands, combined with a very open and collaborative culture. It is a place where people are approachable, get stuck in and want to do the right thing, which makes a big difference. There is also a nice balance of heritage and ambition – we know who we are, but there is a real appetite to keep improving and moving forward.

Nichols beverage of choice

It has to be Vimto – the original squash is still the number one for me. That said, I am also partial to a fizzy Vimto, and the bon bons are hard to ignore.

Downtime

Most of my time outside work is spent with my kids, usually coaching their football teams or driving them around to various activities. In the gaps around that, I enjoy the gym, padel and skiing when I get the chance.

Life before Nichols:

I began my career at Deloitte before holding a number of senior finance positions at Asda and J Sainsbury plc. Before joining Nichols, I was Deputy Chief Financial Officer at THG plc, a position I held for more than eight years, where I played a central role in the Group’s strategic and financial evolution, including its London Stock Exchange IPO.

First-ever job:

Stacking shelves at my local supermarket, Morris Save-rite, earning £1.97 an hour. After a year I moved on to the bright lights of working the McDonald’s drive-through.
